Music videos normally try to make the artist look appealing, as it will attract more people to listen to the music. Here we have done an extreme close up shot of kemishas mouth zooming out slowly. This uses the convention of having beauty shots and effect to boost people’s appearance in order to attract the right audience.
We added an effect, which was a glow ray effect where personally I think, makes the kemisha look flawless; drawing attention towards her. She’s looking directly at the camera, which gives it the sense of her looking at the audience instead which creates a positive bond between the target audiences and artist.
From watching and analysing plan B’s music video as a group we have decided to use I Stop Motion with in our work. This was a fun aspect of our work and we enjoyed it very much. As you can see it’s basically several pictures of the sweet moving in each different shot taken. I stop motion gave it that distorted insane look which is something that we were hoping to portray.
We developed the idea of using I stop motion in our work in comparison to plan B’s video by not using clothes and everyday object to move around in the video; instead we changed the idea to the candy moving around and have used lots of different sweets in order to portray the girls obsession for candy. This hopefully was a great technique to use in our video as we have received really good feedback from our audience
The flash of the lollipop is there to portray her thinking he is candy but he really isn’t. You should be able to tell this from her reaction. Furthermore we chose to do this because we wanted to have a consistent/ running theme of candy throughout our video. Also this allowed us to amplify the narrative aspect of the video, which was basically there to show this girls obsession with sweets/candy.
Because our music video is both narrative and performance based we had to think about the mis – en - scene carefully. In order to show the performance aspect we decided to have a stage set up with electric guitars and microphone for lead singer as this will automatically connote this video can be performance based there are many shots through out the video were we see the instruments and the stage. The narrative is basically done in different locations where as the performance has been done in one setting.
During the pre production stage we went through various styles and we did want to make the text 'twirl' looks as if it was going into a twirl however it didn’t look as good as we hoped
The typography twirl was only used on the poster and the digi pack, as on the video it was irrelevant.
Another typography we used with in our ancillary texts was for the album and son name ‘candy’ which was written in a different style to the name of the band. Zain Malik created the typography of ‘candy’ using Photoshop cs5. We tried to make the fond looks like candy in order to connote what the song and album is about.
The difference between the music video and the typography in the music video and poster is that we did it using actually sweets, which spell out the name 'candy' (album and name of song).
Overall from the typography I think as a group we cross promoted our ancillary text really well.
Props- the mise en scene within our ancillary texts matches up well throughout the video, poster and digi pack. We have used the same props throughout such as the microphone and the guitars, which we used in all texts. Having same props throughout give it a whole look and suggest that its one genre. The instruments represented the genre of the song, as instruments such as electric guitars are usually associated with the rock genre.
Lighting- I personally think we could have done better with lighting in our music video however the lighting looks the same in the dig pack and the poster but in the music video which is good as it helps us to cross promote. In the poster and the digi pack we have used a lens flare but in the music video there is no lens flare, which is because we decided to add it in using Photoshop cs5.
Costume- the band dress code is conventional to the pop rock genre. We have used the same costume within the music video, poster and the dig pack in order for us to be able to cross promote and because to us as a group it looked good. Furthermore there are lots of existing artist who repeat mise en scene through out put the ancillary texts.
Star persona- the band has a unique look and style through out the ancillary texts. The band members are all gazing into the camera and not smiling connoting their serious people however this is not the case this contradicts what the music video is all about however this is a good thing as it will shock the audience when they watch it. The cinematography we used within the poster is a low angle connoting they are dominant and powerful. This specific look is carried out through out all the ancillary texts.
Audience feedback on the poster was very significant for us as it helped us to come to a decision for which design idea we should go for.
The poster is basically there for use to appeal to our target audience and the attention of others, so their opinion matter a lot at this stage.
From the audience feedback we received I learnt that everybody’s tastes is different and people can be very opinionated, however this is a good as it helped me critically analyse my design ideas, and see it through another point of view. For example one of the designs was of katusha at the back posing seductively and gazing to the camera, whilst the other two where on the floor also gazing towards the camera and looking seductive. This idea does appeal to the audience however it doesn’t suit the target audience were going for as our audience are people who are still in education, which mean the image may look a bit inappropriate and not so suitable.
Colour is important and the typography too… if it looks plain it would be less effective and less appealing. When the audience saw the ideas they could see that the typography looked very similar in every idea. Next time I would make sure that I do different fonts/typography to appeal to all tastes in order to get better feedback.
Once the poster was actually created and when back to my target audience for feedback, know one really said I needed to change anything so I left it this way. However I personally think the band name should have been placed somewhere else rather then on main leads t-shirt. Also the album name could have been much, much bigger.
