Genre Analysis - soft pop rock
Cinematography-
A Long shot is used at the beginning showing all the members of the band as well as all the space surrounding them. This shot connotes that the space around them is insignificant as there is nothing in the background.
A Mid shot is used following the long shot allowing the audience to see the band better. this could be seen as a convention of the rock genre.
close ups of individual members of the band is shown after the mid shot which are like beauty shot, giving the band members more air time.
Editing-
This music video has used cloning
Another editing technique used are cutaways.
Mise en Scene
there are six different locations with in the music video.
they have three costume changes
Props used with in the video are mainly the musical instruments such as the guitar, drum kit, microphone and stand

institutional research
The record label that we think would best suit our band is Arista records, which is an American label owned subsidiary of Sony music entertainment; one of the major distributers. We would sign them to this particular label because they are a mainstream organization which means that our bands music would reach a wide range of audience.
Appropriate TV channel for our band would be music channels such as MTV 2, kerrang, MTT rock. This is mainly because in the UK these channels are typical channels that represent ours bands genre as well as others. This means that our band will be able to reach their primary target audience as well as the mainstream audience. Furthermore having their music on these TV channels would give them more publicity which could help promote their star persona (what I mean by this is that the viewer would see the bands style and if they like it they may decide to copy the style).
The magazines that are most appropriate to advertise our band through, would be Neo and black velvet as these magazines mainly feature rock band artists and also because they appeal to our primary target audience. (we know that these magazine appeal to our target audience as we did some audience background research)
Other possible magazines we could advertise in would be teen magazines such as teen vogue and now magazine because even though the genre of our music is Rock it has also that soft pop rock element to it which would strongly attract teenage girls.
We can promote the band by giving discount to fans. For example if they buy the bands album they get 2 concert tickets for the price of 1. This sort of promotion for the band would save money for target audience which would hopefully get more people to buy their products such as posters and clothes as well as appear at the bands live performances.
We can market the band through web 2.0 sites. For example we could create a Facebook page for our band which will allow existing fans to share their music and interest with their friends and friends of friends creating a wider fan base for Twirl. We could also market them by having an official website which will contain information on, the band where to buy their music and other useful information that will keep the audience in the picture.
Also the band could make an appearance on chat shows or TV programs such as X factor which could again give them the chance to gain more fans and reaching a wider and varied target audience.
Lastly another way we could promote our band is through having them support other artists such as Avril Lavigne during concerts. E.g. while Avril Lavigne is changing costumes / preparing the set Twirl could keep the crowd entertained. Twirl could also introduce the artist before they actually start performing. This would be beneficial for both artists as they may have slightly different target audience who can now tap into either of their music if they like It.

General Genre Study: reggae
Cinematography:A long shot and a low angle has been used on the artist for the first shot of the video connoting he is the artist and is the main person to focus on through out the song. The low angle on the artist could also signify that he is dominant and powerful or that he has used this angle deliberately as he wants his audience to look up to him. The long shot allows the audience to get a clear view of who the artist is and allows the audience to see the artists costume. Following the long low angle shot an establishing shot has been used allowing us to see where the video has been set. Mid shots have been used of the artist which show the artist body from knee up, this may be because the artist is dancing slightly and he wants the audience to be able to see the move clearly so they could try to copy/ learn the move so when they watch the song again the audience can dance along with him as well.
An extreme close up was used in the club showing only the hands of fans up in the air this connotes that this song is something that his audience should also be able to put their hands in the air and move them side to side to the song.
There are closeup shots of the artist while he driving which may be considered as beauty shots.
Editing: The editing of the music video is slow whereas the beat of the song is fast this signifies that this music video is not a conventional music video as a conventional music video is edited alongside with the beat of the music.
The artists costume are birght and vibrant colours such as yellow, green, white which makes him stand out.
Mise en Scene: The mise en scene used in this music video are amazing and are conventional of a reggae music video. for example the beautiful seaside and shots of the palm trees are what you would usually see in a reggae music video.
type:This music video is mainly a performance video with aspects of a narrative. there is evidence of this as the artist is singing directly into the camera. Also within in the music video i denote clips of a carnival which is more evidence for why this is a performance music video as they are performing dance moves.
Furthermore i think this video has aspects of a narrative video, this is because from the beginning of the video we see the artist going into a car, driving down the road, picking up a woman from a house and driving off with her which is basically illustrating the lyrics of the song.

Music video using intertextuality and post modernism
Cinematography
Editing
Sound
Mise en scene
With in the music video it points out the costume of the artists. Ja rule is wearing a plain black top, a cardigan over it plain jeans and shoes which connote he is not part of street life anymore. Ashanti is wearing a revealing, tight all black outfit with boots which connotes she is more street and is playing the role of one. Their dress code shows the audience the artists interpretation of how a stereotypical person would look if they dressed streetwise.
Ja rule and Ashanti have used intertextuality throughout this video, making reference to the film Greece. This is firstly done by the mise en scene where in 'Greece' Sandy and Danny are in the fair ground. The image below is a scene from greece

Baby boy Music video by Beyonce and Sean Paul - Analysing Representaion of Gender
The shot types and angles used to represent Sean- Paul are lots of mid shots and long shot allowing the audience to see his dance moves. the reason for why a video may want to show dance moves is because it wants the audience to repeatedly watch it and learn the dance moves so they can do it.
the shot types and angles used to represent Beyonce are varied suggesting that she is more significant and may be that she is more popular than Sean- Paul. the shots used are lots of extreme close ups, close ups, mid shots, many beauty shots.
Sean- Pauls dress code is a black blazer, a beige/ black t-shirt, jeans, a watch, black shades and a chain which all connotes the more jewellery you have and designer clothes the more successful you look also the more you wear the better. This influences the target audience to wear similar items as they may see him as their role model and like his style and image.
Beyonce's dress code follows the motto less is more, most her clothing's are skimpy and very revealing which appels to the male gender. However this also can apeal to the female audiences as they may look at her and feel like they want to look like her as she is very feminine and sexy.

Laura Mulvey - Feminist theorist
Laura Mulvey claims that media text are mainly made by men and women are often solely as the purpose of display- particular criticism can be made towards rap/ hip hop videos that use females purely for voyeristic pleasure and are on display.
Voyeurism- is a complex argument in basic terms it means pleasure of watching other where the viewer/ watching surveillance/ CCTV are used a lot now in music video and play around with this idea.

Analysis of Past Student Work
Ice-Cream
This music video is from the pop genre. i know this because of the lively music and the bright colours used within the typography.
the candidate has used lots of camera shots which have also been edited to work with the music. This work really well for a music video as it quick which will make the target audience stay interested as they see various things.
i can see that the candidate has used stop motion with in their video which is very creative.
They have also used typography to amplify some of the key words from the song.
I think overall the video should get a level 3. i think if they wanted to achieve a higher level they could have been less repetitive
Its a Monster
The mise en scene used in the candidates work is very creative as it uses conventions of the rock genre through the props and costume. One of the costumes of the artist is a red monster suit which creates comedy within the music video. This connotes that the candidate has clearly thought about their artist’s star persona and his costume. The main artist is portrayed as a rock star I denote this from his dress code such as the skinny jeans and the red jacket and a his outgoing punk hair style which instantly give the sense of the type of Music genre the music video is. The props used in the mise en scene that the candidate has used within the video are the instruments. Instruments like an electric guitar and a drum kit are very conventional for a rock genre as well as having a band rather than a solo artist.
The candidate has used the lighting effectively as there are various shots done in the dark however the candidate has used the lighting to their advantage so the audience can actually see.
The candidate decided to sync the cutting of the vegetable with the beat of the music as well as having the red monster doing it made it more interesting to look at and gave it some humor.
Green screen has been used in two part of the video which gave it that sense of parody. The movement of the artist’s mouth has been slowed down using special effect and a one point the movement of him going up the stairs was speeded up which was a good effect to use. This type of music video is s performance combined with a narrative.
The cinematography used included a range of shot type such as extreme close up, close up mid shots and long shots. Also the candidate has used some low angles in the video connoting he is dominant. Low angle are usually used on artists in a music video to give them that high status of being in power.
On the whole I would give this music video a level 4 as it is very creative, well planned; as the audience I was able to understand and follow the narrative. The video also has the repeatability aspect to it as it is quiet funny the genre may be glam rock and I think it was an excellent music video as overall it was creative and original.

Paramore- Ignorance (video analysis)
This music video is a live perfomance of a band playing instruments and singing.
The band is from the rock genre i know this because of their dress code and props within the video such as the electric guitars. i denote 5 members in the band; a vocalist Hailey William and 4 instrument players. This video meets the criteria of a Performance video as it does'nt tell a story like a narrative or use visuals working with the tempo like a conceptual video, but shows the artist singing into the camera and the band playing on their instruments.
The target audience of the band would be ....
Cinematography
The music video starts of with a zooming shot going through a door into a darkened room which reveal the band. The camera zooms into a close up shot of Hailey Williams connoting she is significant and may be the main artist of the band. As the video goes on there are some beauty shots of the instrument players however they are dominated by the Hailey as she gets more air time.
Mise en scene
The music video is shot in a small darkened room with a lightbulb hanging above their head, this connotes that they are stars and that they can shine like the light. through out the video Hailey William is holding that bulb and flashing it towards her and the other band members but the cord is too short this suggest that she is on top leaving the rest in the dark.
Also their are only two locations within the video, the other location was much more spacious and had Hailey Williams in a box room full of mirrors

Practice stopmotion
This is a video of the practice i stopmotion i did with Rebbecca and Rayna. The experiment went well as we got the animation to work.
We experiment on istopmotion to see whether we could use this technique in our music video. As you can see from my video it is used to make animations.
I decided to use text to animate, which didnt work as well as i thought it would, as the glitter glue pen i used to write the letters of the word 'love' kept running down the page making it harder for the animation to work successfully.
If i do use stopmotion with in my music video i dont think i will use a glitter glue pen to write the text with. Instead i could use objects such as sweets or infact use play dough to create characters .

Cross media study
CD cover
This album cover is very plain and simple which can be signifying that this album may not be an uplifting. the colour pallete is gray scale giving a dull and sad look which connotes that the song will be too.
Alicia Keys takes up have of the CD cover connoting she is signifcant which means that audience attention should be mainly on her.
The image of the artist is very different to how other artists are portrayed in their cd covers. what i mean by this is that usually artist would be showing off their assettes to draw in a particular target audience (voyerism) however Alicia doesent do this connoting she wants to reach a target audience that like her for her music and not her look.
the typogrpahy on the Cd cover is bold with capital letters part from the firrst letter in her name. This could connote that she finds it insignificant, through this she is showing how she is feeling, which may be hurt and broken as their is a tear drop falling from the 'S' in her name.
Poster
This poster in comparison to her Cd cover is very different. The poster has colour for one and secondly she is not potrayed as simple and here she is using her assettes to draw attention to her from aparticular target audience.
Futhermore, the cinematopgraphy used for Alicia's image is a mid shot where is placed in the centre of the poster rather then by the side like she is in her album cover.
the colour used in the poster is mainly purple which is a colour that connotes love, affection and passion. This allows the audience to immedietly get a sense of the song may be about.
The typogrpahy used is also similar to the Cd cover which show a clear cross media promotion. The typogrpaphy is slightly different as it doesnt have the tear drop that i denoted in the cover however i think it is insignificant as you by looking at Alicia Keys you can automatically see that is in an emotional state
The music video
How these media products use cross promotion
The poster of her single 'Try sleeping with a broken heart' and the CD cover album both link through typography. It has been changed slightly but the first letter is represented the same. the CD cover has a teardrop slightly falling down from her name giving us the sense of her emotions. This is shown differently in the poster where i think she is showing her emotions through her image .
The poster and the music video are linked through the colour scheme. the poster has a purple wash over it and in the video she is wearing a purple bodysuit.
The body suit and the poster cover both amplify her sex appeal, they both reveal her in the sense of her sexuality.
the poster and the video are also linked. they are linked through the shot in the video of the sky and the sky in the poster, this can connote shes heavenly.
Star Persona
Alicia Keys star persona is down to earth and sexy at the same time. Alicia Keys is showing some flesh connoting voyeurism which appeals to the male target audience.
She wears simplistic jewelry and is in fashion, you can see this through her dress code. She is an rnb singer going for the rock style/look, with the studded jacket plain vest and dark colours, shades and her hair style.

A conceptual music video
This video is a conceptual/ narrative video. It uses stop motion that follows the life and dreams of a young woman. The cinematography used within this music video is mainly long shots and I think they have done this because they wanted the audience to see everything that is going on within the shot. The long shots also create a sense of voyeurism as the audience are looking into the woman’s life and dreams/ takes away her privacy. The cinematography used within in this video is simple but effective as it uses a bird’s eye view creating a different way of seeing a music video which is a brilliant way to keep the audience's interested in the video. There is little camera movements used within the video subverting the conventions of a music video as camera movement are usually used to keep the audience watching the video and giving it that repeatability factor .
The editing techniques this video uses are mainly cutaways. The main reason for this is because using other editing technique may make the video look to complex and very hard to follow through.
The mise-en-scene plays a significant part within the video as they help s to illustrate the lyrics . The prop, mattress is used in every shot for the performance part of the video where as other props such as blankets and the pillows are used to create the scenery for example somewhere in the video the blanket was used to represent water and pillows for clouds.
The lighting is also significant in the video as It helps to create a difference between locations the artist is trying to show.
Frith 1998, A Theorist
Frith's theory consists of three types of cretieria which a type of genre would fit into the criterias are as follows:
Performance- a video that captures a live performance of a band/ artist, showing the exitement of a live event which is used often in music videos foe the metal, rock, punk and country genres
Narrative- a video which tells a story. a chaint of events with a begining, middle and end this mainly applies to hip hop and country genres.
conceptual- visuals that are appropriate to the tempo will use frentic camerawork and fast montage editing can be artistic. shocking, emotional or humourous and displays the idea of a particular director or linked closely to the themes of an artist or band

A narrative music video
This is a narrative music video as it fits into the narrative criteria. A narrative normally tells a story with a chain of events taking place with a beginning, middle and an end.
In Taylor Swifts video "you belong with me" there are series of different settings which narrates her lyrics several times; for example when she says she’s in her room, she is in her bedroom or when she says walk in the streets with you and your worn out jeans, which basically narrates the boy in the video coming towards her. this suggest that the Lyrics amplyfy the song which is a convention a music video.
futhermore the begining, middle and the end is cleary shown in the video. At the begining of the story it portrays Taylors and her crush's relationship and gives us a sense she wants to be with him. at the middle of the song Taylors facial expressiob and the Lyrics suggest that she feels he belongs with her and she wants to be with him and finally at the end that is exactly what happens, Taylor becomes this beautiful girl for the dance and steals the heart of her crush.
The genre of this music video is pop. i say this because a Pop music video usually consists of an artist who is lip syncing with the lyrics and would have a narrative reflecting the meaning of the song
The primary target audience would be young teenagers around the age 14-18 and also a secondary target audience of 19-25+ years as pop music usually appeals to younger audience. Furthermore its a song about a school girl crush which may not relate to young adults or above as they have past that stage and may feel it’s not a type of song they can relate to.
The editing of this video is quiet fast tagging along with the tempo

Conventions of a music video
- lyrics: establish a general sense of feeling, mood rather than a meaning.Visuals either illistrate, amplify or contradict the song's music and lyrics
- Music: tempo often drives the editing - edit to the beat
- editing: the most common form is fast montage
- camerawork: has an impact on meaning. Movement angle and shot distance all play a part in the representation of the artist/ band
- intertextuality: references with in a video to other media products or music that a videos target audience may recognise
- exhibitionism: the apparently mor powerful independent female artists of recent years have. added to the complexity of the politics of looking and gender/ cultural debate by being procative and inviting sexualised gaze
